Science Progression Map

 

Intent – A Scientist at New Delaval Primary School should:

 

  • Be equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science in our past, present and future.
  • Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them.
  • Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding.
  • Ask their own questions and work individually and collectively to find answers.
  • Be inquisitive about the world around them.
  • Develop questioning skills, reasoning and descriptive vocabulary.

 


 
The teaching of science at New Delaval Primary School

Teachers refer to "A Creative Approach To Teaching Science" by Nicky Waller when planning their half-termly units. We look for ways to make science investigative and practical to help pupils explore their own lines of enquiry. We aspire for our pupils to leave primary school demonstrating that they can work scientifically.

Every science lesson at New Delaval Primary School begins with the Last Year, Last Term, Last Week approach. Pupils are quizzed on learning from their prior science topics Last Year, Last Term and Last Week. We find this supports our pupils to retain their learning and helps build their confidence within this subject.
